Remarks:

Fever. This county is subject to overflow for 20 miles on the Mississippi & 6 miles on th eOhio, also along the bottoms of Cashe which generally happens in the month of June. It is supposed that by a proper system of drainage and cultivation this county would become as healthy as any county in Southern Ills. These overflows are not considered to prejudicial to health as the health of the country is generally worse in dry seasons. The more futile source of disease being the many pons with which this county abounds & which in dry seasons become partially dried up & stagnant.

School funds and schools are in a very bad condition in this county & it is almost impossible to ascertain anything about them with any degree of exactness, which is principally owing to the very obscure legislation on the subject of common schools & which is entirely unsuitable to the conditions of the country. There are few crimes or criminals reported. Crime is however of frequent occurrence in this section of the country but is rarely punished on account of extremely loose manner in which the law is executed in the Judicial Circuit.

The water of Alexander County is free stone of an excellent quality and is principally found by digging there being but few springs. On the Mississippi & Cashe which is low and subject to overlow, chills and fever prevail to some extent but in the N. Eastern portions of the County which is hilly and broken in its character diseases of that kind are rarely known and the only fatal disease prevalent in this section of the county is pneumonia winter.
